We value the importance of learning beyond the classroom as it supports our CORE values of commitment, ownership, responsibility and excellence, allowing our students to be successful not only academically but also develop important skills of self management.

Study at Broadland contains two components: study tasks and independent study.

Study tasks are specific tasks set by classroom teachers. They could include for example: a piece of writing, answering a series of questions, producing a design or a series of tasks for those subjects choosing to set an extended study task.

A minimum deadline of one week will be set for study tasks to be completed. For extended homework tasks the deadlines should be longer than one week.

Independent study is completed by students in a self managed way. It could include for example, reading a book, revising a specific topic, memorisation using a knowledge organiser or other learning using online programmes such as Quizlet.

The main purpose of independent study is to allow students to consolidate learning that takes place in the classroom, supporting the transition of this learning into students’ long term memory. This is essential preparation for examinations to reduce cognitive load. Teachers will use low stakes tests to ensure students are completing their independent study.

All students across KS3 and KS4 will be provided with a fortnightly study plan with Broadland’s minimum expectations regarding study outside of timetabled lessons. Students within key stage 3 are expected to spend one hour each weeknight on study and students within key stage 4, one hour and 30 minutes per weeknight.

We recognise that many students have commitments outside of school that may mean completing study on a certain weeknight would be a challenge. Students should self manage under the guidance and supervision of parents/carers and are able to catch up study slots on other week nights or during a weekend to allow other commitments to still take place.
